Today, Sharla and I are cycling about 85 kilometers, a really long stretch from Fukui to Lake Biwa, which lies just north of Kyoto. It's Sharla's last day with us for this leg of the trip, so we're making the most of this challenging ride. The first half of the trip had beautiful scenery, but the second half was the worst day of the trip, with mountains and insects taking their toll.

Speaking only Japanese for a day

For the entire day, I've got a challenge to speak only in Japanese. It's tough, especially in the morning before coffee, when my Japanese doesn't come out easily. But after a few coffees and some exercise on the bike, I should be good. It's good practice to get in the swing of things, looking at my surroundings and thinking how to describe them in Japanese. For example, when it's really bright and I can't see a damn thing, the word is 'mabushii' (まぶしい), meaning 'dazzled bright.' Japanese often uses adjectives to sum up a situation.
