Experience a traditional Akita farmstay
Dive into rural Japan with a farmstay, where you live with a local family in their farmhouse. You get to participate in various social and agricultural activities offered by your host. We were warmly greeted by Hatsumi-san, the daughter of our host, 'Okaasan' (mother). Our room was a spacious tatami room on the second floor. The air here smells incredibly fresh, like a forest, which makes sense as Semboku is 80% woodland with tall cedar trees and rice paddies all around. After a full day, Okaasan prepared a traditional Japanese 'gozen' multi-course dinner, served with a shot of sake, which was more than I expected and absolutely perfect. We capped off the long day with a hot bath, donning our yukatas, and sinking into soft futons.
- Spacious tatami room — Our room was a spacious tatami room on the second floor of the farmhouse, offering a comfortable and traditional sleeping arrangement.
- Traditional Japanese 'gozen' dinner — A multi-course Japanese meal, served in a single tray, complete with a shot of sake. It was more than I expected and perfectly satisfying after a full day of activities.
- Hot bath and futon — After a long day, we enjoyed a relaxing hot bath, then put on yukatas and slept soundly on soft, fluffy futons.

Petting Akita Inu dogs at Enishi
At Enishi Guesthouse, you can meet the beautiful Akita Inu couple, Suchan (male) and Fujiko (female). For JPY 300 per person, the guesthouse owner shares the pleasure of petting these big, fluffy dogs with travelers. It's a wonderful opportunity to interact with this iconic Japanese breed.

A historical Japanese town that was once a castle town during the Edo period, divided into a samurai district in the north and a merchant district in the south. Although the castle is long gone, the samurai district, once home to 80 samurai families, has remained largely unchanged for over 400 years. It's a 15 to 20-minute ride from Tazawako Station via Komachi Shinkansen or Tazawako Line. I suggest dedicating an entire day to explore this place, including the merchant district and castle ruins.

- Weeping sakura trees — One of Kakunodate's charms are the weeping sakura trees, whose pinkish petals create a gorgeous contrast against the black fences of the samurai residences, especially beautiful during cherry blossom season.
