1Murakami StationTrain station · Murakami3.9 (283)Murakami Station, 11 Tabatamachi, Murakami, Niigata 958-0854, Japan
Creator's voice- Overhead boarding lines — Unlike typical ground-level yellow lines, Murakami Station uses overhead lines to indicate boarding positions, a practical adaptation for areas with heavy snowfall where ground markings would be obscured.

Ferry to Awashima Island
- Seasickness prevention — To prevent seasickness, sit in the middle of the ship where it's less bumpy, and avoid being either too hungry or too full. I ate three onigiri beforehand to have something in my stomach.

Exploring Uchiura Village on Foot
- Iejirushi (House Marks) — Unique house marks, or 'Iejirushi,' are used on Awashima Island to identify family belongings and tools, especially those used in fishing. They are a modern take on traditional family crests, reflecting the island's distinct culture.
- Awashima's only traffic light — Awashima Island has only one traffic light, an push-button type, located next to the elementary and junior high school. It was installed in 2007 primarily to teach children how to use traffic lights before they move to the mainland for high school.

Traditional Awashima Dinner at Genzamon Inn
4Genzamon InnHotel · Numazu4.5Awashima Hotel, 186 Uchiurashigedera, Numazu, Shizuoka 410-0221, Japan- Traditional tatami room — My room was an 8-tatami mat room with a view of the Sea of Japan. It's a simple, traditional Japanese-style room with futons laid out during dinner. The bathroom and toilet are shared.
- Free island-wide Wi-Fi — The guesthouse provides information on how to access free island-wide Wi-Fi by downloading the 'Shiraseai' app. This is a valuable amenity, as mobile signal can be spotty in some mountainous areas of the island.
- Two meals included — Staying with two meals (dinner and breakfast) costs ¥8800. This is highly recommended as the dinner alone is valued at ¥3300, making it a great deal compared to a ¥5500 room-only stay.
- Boiled thread-sail filefish (Kawahagi no Nitsuke) — A tender, flaky white fish boiled in a savory sauce. The meat was substantial and melted in my mouth, with a perfectly balanced flavor that wasn't too salty, allowing the natural taste of the fish to shine.
- Sea bream sashimi (Tai no Sashimi) — Fresh, firm, and delicious sea bream sashimi, a staple of Awashima's seafood. It had a satisfying bite and a clean taste.
- Grilled turban shell (Sazae no Tsuboyaki) — Two pieces of grilled turban shell, a personal favorite. The liver had a rich bitterness, and the meat was exceptionally crunchy, even more so than typical turban shells, making it a perfect accompaniment to shochu.
- Fried rock seaweed (Iwanori no Age) — A unique local specialty, deep-fried rock seaweed. It has a crunchy, almost 'gorigori' texture, unlike crispy Korean seaweed. Topped with butter, it's excellent as a snack with sake or paired with white rice. The seaweed is known for its strong aroma, a result of being tossed in the rough waves of the area.
- Awashima Shochu 'Nippon' — Awashima's local potato shochu, named 'Nippon,' which means 'mother' in the local dialect. It's a very refreshing and sweet shochu with a distinct potato flavor. It's brewed in Shibata, Niigata, as there are no distilleries on the island. I shared a bottle with other guests, as it came in a large 720ml bottle.

Cycling Awashima Island by Electric Bicycle
- Electric bicycle rental — Electric bicycles are available for rent at the tourist information center in Uchiura. They are highly recommended for navigating the island's hilly terrain. Rental costs ¥1500 for up to 3 hours. There are only about 8 electric bikes, so rent early.
- Limited drink vending machines — Drink vending machines are only available in the Uchiura and Kamaya areas, so plan accordingly and carry water when cycling other parts of the island.
5Awashima RanchDude ranch · Awashimaura4.6 (28)Japan, 〒958-0061 Niigata, Iwafune District, Awashimaura, Awashima Farm, 兀ノ脇656- Free-roaming horses — Horses roam freely at Awashima Ranch, sometimes even crossing the road. They are generally gentle and can be petted. Each horse has a name, like 'Awatan' and 'Momotan.' Some younger horses can be playful, so it's advised to keep a meter's distance from them.
- Horse riding experience — Horse riding is available at the ranch for approximately ¥5000. It offers a unique opportunity to ride with stunning views of the Sea of Japan and the mainland mountains.
6Butsuzaki ViewpointObservation deck · Sanuki4.0 (38)Closed · opens Monday 8:30 AMCape Okushi Observation deck / Lawn square, Kamosho, Sanuki, Kagawa 769-2102, Japan- Wind-swept vegetation — The vegetation at Butsuzaki is uniquely shaped by strong westerly winds, appearing as if it's been mowed short and leaning in one direction. This creates a distinctive landscape that looks like 'matcha powder sprinkled on chocolate.'
7Yasutsuki Kannon HallBuddhist temple · Shozu District4.4 (65)Tonosho, Shozu District, Kagawa 761-4153- Heian-era Kannon statue — The hall houses a Kannon statue from the Heian period, believed to have emerged from the sea. It is only displayed to the public three times a year (July and twice in August), making it a rare and sacred sight.

Lunch at Shokudo Shimaya: Awashima's Wappani
8Shokudo ShimayaIsland · Awashimaura4.4Awashima Island, Awashimaura, Iwafune District, Niigata 958-0061, Japan- Wappani Teishoku · ¥2000 — Awashima's signature dish, 'Wappani,' served as a set meal. It's a hot soup kept boiling by a superheated stone placed inside the bowl. The stone is removed before eating. The soup features a clear, savory broth with various fish (like thread-sail filefish) and green onions, less salty than miso soup, highlighting the natural flavors of the seafood. The fish is tender and easy to eat, with bones that are not bothersome. The set also includes fresh sashimi, boiled fish, and a very sticky mekabu seaweed with miso. Price: ¥2000.
- Mekabu with miso — A side dish of mekabu (seaweed) mixed with miso. It's incredibly viscous and sticky, almost like natto, with a unique texture that's hard to break with chopsticks.
9Awashima Village MuseumDude ranch · Awashimaura4.6 (28)Japan, 〒958-0061 Niigata, Iwafune District, Awashimaura, Awashima Farm, 兀ノ脇656- Ita-hi (memorial stones) — Ancient memorial stones dating from the Kamakura to Muromachi periods (over 500 years old). These stones were erected to express gratitude to ancestors and hope for a joyful afterlife. Awashima has a high concentration of these stones, as the beautiful sunsets over the Sea of Japan were traditionally seen as the entrance to paradise.
