Things to do in JAPAN - Beyond Tokyo(東京) - Shikoku, Japan [Itinerary Ideas] #TravelJapan #gotoキャンペーン

You absolutely must visit Chichibugahama Beach for the sunset. Google Maps describes it as an area where large tide pools reflect the colors of the sunset, and it's absolutely correct. The colors, reflections, and views are incredible. Just be careful not to wear your walking shoes into the wet sand like I did! It's a total vibe, and while many people will be taking photos, it's a large enough beach that you can get your own shots. It's an absolute must-visit.

Wake up early and enjoy the fresh air and beautiful scenery at Ritsurin Garden. This well-known 1700s garden is located right in Takamatsu city, making it easy to walk to. Don't expect to rest, though, as there are over two kilometers of walking to do! You'll see hundreds of perfectly maintained pine trees with twisting branches, displaying a beautiful and complex Japanese aesthetic. There are also cherry blossom trees, lilies, ginkgo trees, and Japanese maples. You can choose from multiple walking courses or take relaxing boat tours along the ponds. This is a staple in any Shikoku itinerary and a must-go.

You'll definitely want to visit the Iya Kazurabashi Bridge. In the past, these suspension bridges made of mountain vines were one of the only ways to move people and goods across the Iya Valley. This bridge stretches 45 meters across the river. It's worth a visit to take in the craftsmanship, but it can be full of crowds, swaying back and forth, making you wonder if that selfie is worth dropping your camera. It's a must-go, but only once.

For a truly unique experience, drive about an hour deeper into the forest to the Oku-Iya Kazurabashi Bridges. Many places don't discuss how to get here online, but simply look up 'Oku-Iya Kazurabashi Bridge'. There's one very small road that takes you there on the north side of the river. Once you arrive, you'll understand why I recommend it: no one is around, it's empty, and the nature is all yours. Bring a snack and lunch because there are no shops or food here, just you inside the forest. Take all the photos you want, run across the bridge, and truly enjoy mother nature. These two bridges stand side by side, deep in the inner valley. There's also a wild monkey bridge nearby where you can pull yourself across the river in a wooden cart – I tried it and almost dropped my camera! It's very small but definitely worth a try. This is a must-go every time.

After skipping lunch for the bridges, I was starving, so it was a quick two-hour drive to Kochi to hit Hirome Market. Google calls it a 'happening indoor marketplace featuring restaurants and multiple vendors of street food and souvenirs.' The katsuotataki here is to die for; it's what people come here to eat, and it's really good. The whole location has an izakaya-like atmosphere, like a buffet of different foods where you pay for each. It's a must-go every time.

At Tosa Tataki Dojo, you get to cook your own katsuotataki, which is a full experience! Just grab a stick and hold the fish over the straw fire – cooking made easy. It's a great way to see firsthand how they grill the fish. Who knows if the straw burning onto your fish is healthy, but you do as they say, right? My final thought is to try it at least once, and then go to Hirome Market for more.
