You can walk up to the 'Umanose' (horse's back) ridge for panoramic views of the Sea of Japan. It's a challenging climb, but the view is worth it. Be aware of local rules: no taking sand, no littering, no swimming, no graffiti, and drone use requires permission from the visitor center. After visiting Izumo Taisha, try the local specialty, Warigo Soba. Many soba restaurants are located around the shrine's main approach. Warigo Soba is characterized by its strong-flavored buckwheat noodles served in stacked, round, lacquered bowls (warigo). I chose the 3-color warigo, with different toppings on each layer (yam, egg, fried tempura). The traditional way to eat it is to pour the dashi broth from the top bowl to the next, adding more as needed, until you finish all three layers. The noodles are firm and thin, and each layer offers a unique flavor.

Honden (main hall) — A National Treasure, this main hall was rebuilt in 1744 and is the largest shrine structure in Japan. While you cannot enter, its imposing presence is a testament to its historical significance.

Hike Mt. Daisen's Summer Trail

Start your hike from Daisen Guest House Ju-An, which is just a 10-minute walk (700m) from the summer trail entrance. The trail is well-maintained with many stairs, especially in the lower sections. It's a 7-hour round trip for a relaxed pace with photo stops, but experienced hikers can do it in 3-5 hours. Make sure to bring hiking poles (I forgot mine and had to go back!). There's a restroom at the trailhead, portable toilets at the 6th station shelter, and a mountain hut with facilities at the summit. The trail offers stunning views of the Sea of Japan and Mt. Daisen's foothills from the 6th station onwards. The summit (1709m) offers panoramic views, though the true peak (Kengamine, 1729m) is restricted due to danger.
