Riding the Hokkaido Shinkansen through the Seikan Tunnel
I'm taking the Hayabusa 40 Hokkaido Shinkansen from Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto Station to Morioka, a journey of 1 hour and 50 minutes, departing at 16:20. I'm in a comfortable ordinary car, which has a 2+3 seat arrangement and ultra-wide seat pitch for ultimate comfort. There's also free Wi-Fi available if you enter your email. The highlight is definitely the 22-minute passage through the Seikan Tunnel, the longest railroad tunnel in Japan, running 54 km under the Tsugaru Strait, connecting Hokkaido and Honshu. Completed in 1988, it was once the world's longest railway tunnel. The underwater section alone is 23.3 km long. Shinkansen trains take over 20 minutes to pass through it.
