Tokyo's Daily Food Journey: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
“This food tour takes you through a typical Japanese day of eating in Tokyo, from a local diner breakfast to a fresh seafood lunch in Ginza, and an authentic yakitori dinner in Shibuya.”
1Shokudo Diner Higashi-ShinjukuJapanese restaurant · Shinjuku City4.1 (463)ClosedMaido Okini Higashishinjuku Shokudo, セントラルハイツ 1階 1 Chome-1-45 Okubo, Shinjuku City, Tokyo 169-0072, Japan- Grilled Saba Mackerel · ¥1690 (as part of a set) — A very common type of grilled fish, buttery and juicy, served with daikon radish puree. It's my favorite thing on the plate for its texture and oiliness. You can microwave it briefly to warm it up.
- Grilled fish (long fish) · ¥1690 (as part of a set) — A longer grilled fish, a bit drier than the saba mackerel, with an almost tuna-like dry texture. Still a good choice if you're looking for variety.
- Miso soup · ¥1690 (as part of a set) — A classic miso soup, a staple of Japanese breakfast.
- Eggplant with ginger · ¥1690 (as part of a set) — A side dish of eggplant with a nice ginger flavor that melts in your mouth.
2SanshuyaIzakaya restaurant · Chuo City2.0 (197)ClosedSanshuya Ginza, 並木通り沿い, 2 Chome-3-4 Ginza, Chuo City, Tokyo 104-0061, Japan- Chicken soup · ¥3300 (as part of a set for 2) — An incredible roasted chicken soup, salty and pure, with chicken that literally melts in your mouth. It's the cleanest chicken I've tasted in a long time, even though the restaurant mostly serves seafood.
- Fresh sashimi · ¥3300 (as part of a set for 2) — A beautiful plate of fresh sashimi, including thick slices of tuna with fresh wasabi. The tuna has the texture of a slab of butter, with zero stringiness and an extreme, almost crab-like flavor.
- Steamed fish · ¥3300 (as part of a set for 2) — A steamed fish dish with a butter-like texture that melts in your mouth. It's light, fluffy, impressively fresh, clean, and has an insane texture.
3Shibuya Morimoto YakitoriShibuyaShibuya, Tokyo
Creator's voice- Chicken sashimi · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — A beautiful presentation of raw chicken sashimi, served with wasabi and a lime-soy sauce dip. It's incredibly tender, not chewy, and has no off-taste, showcasing the restaurant's care in sourcing specific breeds of organic chickens.
- Tsukune (chicken meatball) · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — A sausage-shaped chicken meatball, incredibly juicy with a distinct yuzu citrus flavor. It's fantastic and doesn't need any additional sauce.
- Chicken gizzard · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — Grilled chicken gizzard, a favorite organ meat with a nice crispness and a minerally taste. It's like crunchy chicken.
- Chicken tail · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — A juicy, fatty, and crunchy piece of grilled chicken tail, packed with flavor. It's oily but you can taste the pureness of the chicken in every bite.
- Chicken skin skewer · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — A glistening skewer of crunchy, gooey, and rich chicken skin. It's salty with a crispy layer from being grilled over charcoal, very greasy but incredibly tasty.
- Chicken thigh with shiitake mushroom · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — A beautiful, meaty skewer of dark meat chicken thigh with a shiitake mushroom. It's smokey and salty, highlighting the quality of ingredients and grilling technique with minimal seasoning.
- Chicken liver · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — Gorgeous chicken liver, arranged on skewers from small to bigger pieces. It has a leathery skin from grilling but bursts with liquid liver on the inside, like a savory lava cake. This was the bite of the meal.
- Grilled eel · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — A surprising course of grilled eel, sprinkled with sansho pepper. It falls apart easily and has a wonderful smoky flavor.
- Chicken breast with wasabi · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — Nice big chunks of chicken breast with wasabi. It's not dry at all, but gushes with juice, even though it's only half-cooked on the inside.
- Quail eggs and ginkgo nuts · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — Skewers of straight-up quail eggs and ginkgo nuts, right off the grill.
- Shiitake mushrooms · ¥9001 (as part of omakase for 2) — Big, meaty shiitake mushrooms that are juicy, silky, and rubbery at the same time.
