1Nishiki MarketMarket · Kyoto4.3 (53,488)Open nowNishiki Market, Nakagyo Ward, Kyoto, 604-8055, Japan
Creator's voice- Plum Wine · ¥100 — A sweet plum wine, served in a small cup. It's not very strong, so you might need a liter to feel anything!
- Tempura Omelet (Tamagoyaki) · ¥400 — A Japanese rolled omelet (tamagoyaki) dipped in batter and fried. It's a big, greasy bite with soft, silky eggs inside, giving you state fair vibes. It's surprisingly affordable.
- Tempura Squid Tentacle · ¥400 — A fat squid tentacle, cut flat, battered, and fried. It's crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, very yummy. Be careful, it might have a wooden stick inside!
- Tempura Oysters · ¥900 — Three fried oysters. The creator found them very briny and slimy with a sudden crunch, a taste that doesn't quite go together. It was his least favorite of the tempura items.
- Kobe Beef Rice Meat Roll · ¥800 — Thinly sliced Kobe beef wrapped around rice, which was microwaved and soaked in a brown, soy-saucy liquid. The meat is paper-thin, and the creator found it not very good.
- Kobe Beef Nigiri · ¥2000 — Big slices of Kobe beef placed on rice, slightly torched to melt the fat and enhance flavor. The beef is gorgeous, and the contrast with the sweet, vinegared rice is very nice.
- Matcha Beer · ¥800 — A green beer infused with matcha. The creator found it bitter, as matcha without sugar can be, and it made the beer's inherent bitterness even worse.
- Kobe Beef Steak · ¥6000 — A small piece of Kobe beef steak cooked on a flat top, then served with a brown soy sauce. The creator was disappointed, finding it tasted like a grocery store steak from the USA and was not A5 quality, despite being from Kobe.
- Octopus with Quail Egg · ¥900 — A small octopus head with a quail egg inside, lightly flamed. The creator had mixed feelings, describing it as cold, rubbery, semi-sweet octopus with a plain quail egg that didn't mesh well.
- Squid with Squid Eggs · ¥900 — Squid stuffed with squid eggs, lightly flamed. The squid itself was delicious and smoky with a snappy skin, but the thick white log of eggs inside was odd, tasting a bit like pork sausage and rice. The creator preferred this over the octopus with quail egg.
- Grilled King Crab Claws · ¥20000 — King crab claws washed and grilled. The meat was incredibly sweet and outstanding on its own. You can request soy sauce and butter, though the butter is served cold and the creator felt it didn't need the additions. It was the most expensive item in the market.
- Grilled Pork Belly — Thinly sliced uncured pork belly, grilled and coated in a sweet and salty sauce. The creator found it very good.
- Chicken Wing Gyoza (Classic Teriyaki) · ¥1050 — Deboned chicken wings stuffed with gyoza filling (pork, green onion) and coated in teriyaki sauce. The creator found this brand new and absolutely delicious, praising the combination of chicken and gyoza stuffing. This was his absolute favorite food of the day.
- Chicken Wing Gyoza (with Tartar Sauce) · ¥1250 — Deboned chicken wings stuffed with gyoza filling, topped with tartar sauce. The creator found the tartar sauce tough and gloopy, describing it as warm, pickley mayonnaise, which didn't complement the dish well.
- Okonomiyaki (Kobe Beef) · ¥3000 — A Japanese pancake made with egg, batter, and cabbage, topped with Kobe beef, okonomiyaki sauce, and mayonnaise. The creator noted the pancake was thick and full of cabbage, which he considered a low-calorie filler. The sauce was nice, tasting like a sweeter teriyaki, but the Kobe beef was rubbery and chewy. He didn't hate it, but wouldn't recommend it for true East Asian pancake lovers.
2TakohaiTakoyaki restaurant · Kyoto4.1 (714)Open · until 8 PMJapan, 〒604-8121 Kyoto, Nakagyo Ward, Jumonjicho, 456 タコハイ京都錦市場店
Creator's voice- Traditional Takoyaki · ¥500 — Octopus balls with original sauce, mayonnaise, and bonito flakes. The texture is described as weird, leathery, and soupy at the same time, not soft enough or hard enough. However, the flavors (mayonnaise, savory brown sauce, salty bonito flakes) are outstanding, and each ball has a tiny piece of octopus.
- Takoyaki with Tempura Crumble & Chili Oil · ¥557 — Octopus balls with tempura crumble and chili oil. It has the same liquid bread texture as the traditional version, but the tempura adds a nice crunch, and the chili oil brings a kick. It's a spice level 4 out of 10 for general standards, but a 10 out of 10 for Japan.
3Yakitori TsujiyaYakitori restaurant · Kyoto4.7 (3,867)Closed · opens 4 PMYakitori Tsujiya, 522-9 Kitafudodocho, Shimogyo Ward, Kyoto, 600-8233, Japan
Creator's voice- Chicken Skewer with Teriyaki & Caviar · ¥1000 — A chicken skewer with teriyaki sauce, topped with caviar (likely from cod or carp, not sturgeon). The creator found it not bad, noting that caviar adds a new flavor dimension without overpowering the chicken, like an expensive salt.
- Chicken Skewer with Sea Urchin · ¥1300 — A chicken skewer topped with a lot of sea urchin. The creator found this the most surprising bite of the day, and not in a good way. It was very rich, briny, and over the top, with no balance between the sea urchin and the chicken.
