21 Things to do When You Arrive in Japan

Rent a bike at the station in Kamakura and just cruise around the back streets and temples. It's probably the best way to see Japan, as the country is very favorable towards cyclists. I give this an 8 out of 10.

Head into a 7-Eleven and play 'onigiri bingo' – a game I made up to try new flavors. Grab a random onigiri without looking and eat it. Convenience stores have huge sections of onigiri with various fillings like tuna mayonnaise (my favorite), fish eggs, or salmon. Avoid sour plums! It's a fun way to try something new when you're spoiled for choice. I give this a 7 out of 10.

Definitely go to an onsen! If you can't get to a countryside onsen resort (which I highly recommend), the next best thing is Oedo Onsen Monogatari in Odaiba, Tokyo. It's an onsen theme park with an Edo-era styled street where you can wander in a colorful yukata, eat, and drink between dips. It's a bit pricey but a must-do in Japan. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Go to an Izakaya and eat everything! No matter where you are in Japan, it's an incredible place to soak up the atmosphere, enjoy the food and drink, and meet locals all at once. It's an amazing idea. I give it a 9 out of 10.

You can't go wrong with an arcade. You can find them in pretty much every shopping street in Japan. My favorites are Mario Kart and the Taiko drumming game, which is great for stress relief. I also featured 'Cho Chabudai Gaeshi' in an early video, where you play an angry father flipping a dinner table. It's quite rare now but an amazing concept. Visiting an arcade gets a 9 out of 10.

Visit 'That Frog Bar' for one of the strangest and most disturbing experiences in Tokyo. The peculiar owner dresses up like a frog, uses puppet teddy bears to deliver drinks, and tosses off a newspaper. It's pretty memorable, so I give it an 8 out of 10, though I couldn't imagine doing it on your first day.

Take advantage of jet lag and visit the Tsukiji Fish Market. It's the world's largest fish market and an amazing place. Walking through it feels a bit like being underwater, surrounded by millions of fish with water leaking everywhere. Unfortunately, it was closing the next year (from the time of filming), so the clock was ticking to experience it. I give it an 8 out of 10.

Drop your bags at the hotel, eat delicious Katsu at Coco Ichibanya, then buy choco, magazines, and bath salts at the convenience store to enjoy in your hotel room's super deep bath. This is the routine of a battle-hardened frequent traveler. Coco Ichibanya came up a lot in viewer responses; it's easy to see why with their delicious, reasonably priced curry. Just be warned, the curry, rice, and deep-fried pork can knock you out like a horse tranquilizer! It's something you definitely have to try, and you can find them on pretty much every street. I give it a 9 out of 10.

Walk to your hotel room window with an amazing view, gazing at the incredible city of Tokyo, watching the city go by, and pinching yourselves, hoping it's not a dream. Why stay in a windowless love hotel dungeon when you can stay in a room like that? I give it an 8 out of 10. Judging by the photo, you stayed in Shiodome, a district with some of the best views in Tokyo, where you can see Tokyo Tower, Toranomon Hills Tower, and Mount Fuji in the distance. If you're looking for a romantic hotel room to impress a partner or take an 'I made it bitches!' photo, Shiodome or Shinjuku are your best bets, but these rooms don't come cheap, costing about $300-400 a night.

Walk over to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, which has some of the best observation decks in the city, and they're free! I went up there to grasp how big Tokyo was. I sat with an overpriced chocolate cake in the restaurant, overlooking the incredible, never-ending sprawl of buildings, thinking, 'Yeah, I've done it. I've made it to Tokyo.' Then jet lag hit, and I fell asleep next to the cake, only to be rudely awakened by staff throwing me out. Later that evening, I went out for karaoke, which was fun. This was my first day in Japan five years ago.
