Riding the Sunrise Express Sleeper Train

Board the Sunrise Express from Tokyo Station for an 11-hour, 600km overnight journey to Tottori. It's one of Japan's last remaining regular sleeper trains, offering a romantic way to travel. The train arrives around 9:30 AM in Tottori. While the rooms can be unpleasantly hot, the sound of the train is incredibly relaxing, almost like an ASMR experience, making it easy to fall asleep. You can choose between a standard twin room or a deluxe room, which is much more spacious. There are also showers on board, which are a unique experience on a moving train, though a bit difficult due to the shaking. If you have a JR Rail Pass, you can ride for free and stay in the communal area with free beds, which is good value for money. I only got about three or four hours of sleep due to station announcements every 5-10 minutes, but I'd definitely do it again for the experience of going to sleep in Tokyo and waking up in the Japanese countryside with incredible scenery like rice fields and lush forests.

Twin Room — My standard twin room on the Sunrise Express. It's a cool room, and despite being fairly close to others, the train noise drowns out sounds, making it relaxing. My only criticism is that it was very hot, like a mini sauna, even with a fan.
Deluxe Room — Natsuki's deluxe room, which is massive and feels like a palace. It's on a higher floor and offers a luxurious experience, complete with space to relax and enjoy snacks and beer.
Onboard Shower — A unique experience on a moving train, though it's pretty difficult due to the shaking, feeling like a roller coaster ride. The shower works, and it exceeded my expectations despite the difficulty. You get about four minutes of water.
Countryside Scenery — The view from the train in the morning is stunning, showcasing the Japanese countryside with rice fields, luscious forests, and traditional houses. It's incredible to wake up to such remote and beautiful scenery. From smaller rooms, you can even look up at the stars at night.

Exploring the Tottori Sand Dunes

Arrive at the Tottori Sand Dunes, a truly impressive sight that lives up to its reputation. These dunes are 50 meters high and stretch 16 kilometers along the coastline. Unlike many Japanese attractions that look better in photos, these are the real deal. You can even ride a camel across the dunes, which is an amazing experience. Be warned, running down the dunes is quick, but climbing back up can take half an hour!
