We arrived at Obodo Station around 11 PM, much later than expected. It was too late and labor-intensive to set up the bottom bed, so we shared the upper bunk. It was chilly, about 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) in August, so we needed sleeping bags and sweatshirts. We woke up around 6 AM, ready to continue our drive to Nemuro.

We visited Cape Nosappu, the easternmost point of Japan. The weather was very different here – windy, hazy, and cold, not feeling like August at all. We paid our respects quickly due to the crazy strong wind and then moved on through the flat, grassy lands of East Hokkaido.

We stopped for a bath at a local onsen hotel in Rausu. The bath was completely empty except for us, allowing for a private and relaxing soak in the natural geothermal heated water. It was a perfect way to unwind after driving.

After a challenging drive on a bumpy dirt road, we changed into bathing suits and hiked up the Kamuiwaka stream. The water, heated by the onsen waterfall, creates pools perfect for bathing. It's about 26 degrees Celsius, a very refreshing, lukewarm bath water. You must bring your swimsuit, as there are other people around. It felt like paradise, a stunning river of hot water with a waterfall view.

At Watanabe Milk Farm, we had the chance to milk a cow named Honey. There's a specific technique to it, and Peter got a squirt like a pro, while I had a little more trouble. Afterwards, we enjoyed two glasses of freshly squeezed, incredibly creamy milk. We then made butter by shaking buttermilk, which required a lot of effort but resulted in delicious, unsalted butter. We also took a hayride to see the milk cows at their home.

We parked our RV at an auto camp with electricity to recharge. For dinner, we cooked a Mashu wagyu beef steak, which was still mostly frozen but smelled divine. We added some veggies to make a full meal. We also had the Nemuro Hanasaki crabs we bought earlier, using special crab cutters to enjoy the tender, juicy, and flavorful meat. This was real RV life, toasting to Hokkaido from our kitchen on wheels.

We decided to splurge and stay in a log cabin for our last night, Himawari Log Cabin, located on a hill overlooking Naka-Furano's lavender fields. It was a nice break from the RV, offering more space. The first floor had a living room and a clean bathroom, while upstairs was the warmer sleeping room. We also enjoyed the beautiful deck overlooking the town.

We visited Farm Tomita, a famous lavender field in Naka-Furano. Even though it was the end of the season, there were still plenty of flowers to enjoy. I started with a lavender ice cream, which had a beautiful smell. It's a pretty place to walk among the flowers, enjoying Hokkaido's pleasantly mild summer. From here, you can also see Daisetsuzan National Park with Mount Tokachi smoking in the distance.

For our final adventure, we went to Melon Dome in Yubari for an all-you-can-eat Yubari King melon buffet. For 2500 Yen, we had 30 minutes to eat as much as we could. These melons are incredibly valuable, fetching high prices at auction. They kept bringing it, and we kept eating it, leaving much heavier but mostly filled with water.
