We arrived at Otsuka's grandmother's house, a beautiful traditional Japanese home. She welcomed us warmly and prepared a traditional matcha tea ceremony. She even served us a local Beppu Yuno Machi sweet. The matcha was genuine, not like the medicinal taste of some, and the sweet was delicious. It was a truly heartwarming and authentic experience.

We chose a private family onsen room at Hyotan Onsen, which felt very traditional with its thatched roof. The water was incredibly hot, taking about 40 seconds to get used to, but it left our skin feeling incredibly smooth and refreshed. It was a perfect way to relax and unwind after exploring Beppu.

We visited Okamotoya Ryokan, famous for its Jigokumushi Pudding. The pudding has a firm texture, a rich, slightly bitter caramel, and a strong egg flavor. It's incredibly popular, so expect a crowd. We also tried the steamed eggs, which were perfectly half-boiled with a vibrant yellow yolk. The combination of the sweet pudding and savory eggs was a unique Beppu experience.

At Jigokumushi Kobo Kannawa, we experienced 'hell-steaming' our own food using the natural geothermal steam. We chose various ingredients like crab, vegetables, and meat, placed them in baskets, and lowered them into the steam vents. It takes about 15 minutes for most items. The food comes out perfectly cooked, tender, and naturally flavorful. It's a fun and unique way to enjoy a meal in Beppu.

We tried Beppu's famous Toriten, a local specialty of fried chicken. The chicken was incredibly crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, with a light and flavorful batter. It's served with a ponzu-like sauce that adds a refreshing tang. It's a must-try dish when visiting Beppu.
