Driving to Sabukawa is an adventure in itself, taking you down a precariously narrow, disused road into one of Kyushu's most isolated mountain regions. Google Maps insists it's a road, but it's barely passable, making you wish you'd bought full insurance. Phone signal is non-existent, adding to the eerie, horror-film vibe. After 45 minutes, the road ends, and you proceed the last kilometer on foot. It's a challenging drive, but it leads to a truly unique, unsettling destination.

Experience nagashi somen, where noodles flow down a bamboo drain pipe right to your table. It's a fight for your food, as you snatch the noodles out of the stream with chopsticks before they pass by. It's a cool concept but can be a stressful dining experience, especially if you're not quick with chopsticks. Be prepared to fight for your lunch!

Rent a boat and sail down the emerald green waters of Takachiho Gorge to get the money shot of the 17-meter high waterfall. Be warned, it can quickly descend into chaos, especially if you're with an inexperienced captain who might plow into bottlenecks of other boats or steer you perilously close to the waterfall. It's a beautiful, albeit potentially terrifying, way to experience the gorge.

Indulge in a dinner featuring Miyazaki's award-winning wagyu beef and lobster sashimi. The lobster sashimi, specifically spinal lobster, is surprisingly good, with a subdued lobster flavor. The Miyazaki beef, a 15-year winner at the Wagyu Olympics and served at the Academy Awards, is described as the best beef the creator has ever had, offering a perfect balance of fatty, juicy, and meaty. You'll regret not asking for more! The sashimi quality is also a good indicator of the ryokan's overall meal quality.

Explore Beppu's 'Hells,' steamy, otherworldly hot springs with striking colors due to varying minerals. Umi Jigoku, the 'Sea Hell,' is a vibrant cobalt blue, with water violently ejected from the ground, creating an ominous jet-like sound. Chinoike Jigoku, the 'red pond,' is a blood-red spring that looks almost man-made. Be prepared for sulfuric plumes that can be unpleasant, making a mask a good idea. The springs are too hot for swimming, ranging from 60 to 80 degrees Celsius.

Attempting to check into the Dinosaur Love Hotel requires a disguise if you're two guys, as many love hotels in Japan have a rule against it. Once inside, the exterior is impressive with animatronics and a crashed helicopter, but the rooms are a bit of a letdown. Expect a smoky smell, a bed wrapped in a cage, and even a gambling machine. The bathroom is surprisingly large, with room for three people. Checking out involves a unique, old-fashioned vacuum tube system to send your payment to the cashier, locking you in until payment is confirmed. It's an experience, but the room itself might be underwhelming compared to the hype.
