2 Days in Hakone 🌱 Art Museum in the Forest, Mt. Fuji Views & Ancient Cedar Avenue | JAPAN VLOG

From Odawara Station, transfer to the Hakone Tozan Line heading to Hakone-Yumoto, then transfer again to reach Gora Station. It's a bit of travel, but the scenery along the way is totally worth it. The train passes through countless tunnels and sometimes slows down so you can really soak in the views. It feels like a little sightseeing train, even sharing announcements about famous spots. Look out for the three switchbacks and a steep slope of 80 per mil, modeled after Swiss mountain railways!

Take the free shuttle from Gora Station (it runs every 30 minutes) for an 8-minute ride through soothing greenery to the Pola Museum of Art. The building itself blends gently into the forest, making the most of natural light. Start by recharging at the museum’s restaurant with a seasonal non-alcoholic drink and a delicious seasonal plate lunch, enjoying the sweeping view of Mt. Kozuka. Then, dive into the exhibitions like 'The Secrets of Color,' featuring Impressionist and Contemporary art. Don't miss the infinity mirror installation that feels like stepping into a dreamy, timeless world. Afterward, explore the 1km nature trail and outdoor artworks, where sculptures rest quietly among the trees. It's magical in any season, but especially lush in summer or vibrant in autumn.

Take an early bus towards Lake Ashi to reach Hakone Shrine before the crowds. The entrance path is lined with towering cedar trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Even early, there might be a line at Heiwa no Torii (Torii of Peace), the iconic red gate standing in Lake Ashi. You're asked to finish your photo within three minutes to keep the line moving. If the line is too long, peek from the side and then head to a hidden spot nearby for a beautiful lake view. Then, make your way to the main shrine, surrounded by lush forest, for a solemn, sacred feel. Don't miss the 'Ryujin-sui' (Dragon God Water), believed to purify and bring good fortune, and the newer Kuzuryu Shrine honoring the dragon deity of love. Also, see the over thousand-year-old 'Safe Childbirth Cedar,' where Minamoto no Yoritomo once prayed.

Head to Bakery & Table Hakone, which opens at 9 a.m. While the second-floor seats with a lovely view might be full, you can still enjoy a delicious breakfast. The curry bun is amazing and not oily at all. The best part? There's a foot bath you can enjoy while you eat, which feels so good, especially on a windy day. Keep an eye out for the best view of Mt. Fuji from this spot, which wasn't crowded even on a weekend during our visit.

Walk along the Old Tōkaidō Road Ancient Cedar Avenue, a path that was once part of an old main road. These magnificent cedar trees were planted back in 1618 to shield travelers from harsh sun in summer and cold wind in winter. It's a place where you can truly feel the history in the trees. You'll find little hidden beauties along the path, like hydrangeas in June or moss covering the trees. It's a peaceful walk, and you might even spot maple trees. I was just so happy to walk along this ancient path with no one around.

Visit Onshi-Hakone Park, which stands on the former site of the Hakone Imperial Villa. While the original villa was destroyed by earthquakes, an observation hall modeled after it has been built in its place. The view from the window looks like a framed painting. Take a little break with tea and ice cream in the cafe inside. There are also lovely gardens to explore if you have more time.

Hop on the Hakone Sightseeing Cruise to experience the vastness of Lake Ashi. Head up to the top deck to enjoy the stunning views, especially the even more gorgeous Mt. Fuji view from here. The cruise takes you towards Togendai Port, with a quick stop at Motohakone Port. You'll get a unique perspective of the torii gate of Kuzuryu Shrine floating on the lake. The 30-minute boat ride goes by in a flash.
