Start your exploration of Kifune Shrine in the late afternoon as the crowds begin to thin out. While the traditional order is Main, then Inner, and finally Middle, you can start at the Inner Shrine (Okumiya) if you're already nearby. Discover the sacred 'ryūketsu' (dragon cave) and the 'Renri no Sugi' tree where cedar and maple have grown as one. Then move to the Middle Shrine (Yui no Yashiro), famous for matchmaking, where you can tie wishes on green paper slips. Finally, descend to the Main Shrine, admiring the iconic red lantern staircase. Don't miss trying the water fortune slip and the refreshing ramune soda made with sacred spring water. During Tanabata (July 1st to August 15th), the shrine is illuminated in the evening, with more frequent buses running later into the night.

Head to Shijo Street for Yoiyama, the vibrant festival eve right before the big float procession of the Gion Festival. The main streets around Shijo and Karasuma close to traffic, transforming into a huge pedestrian walkway. Just go with the flow and follow the friendly crowd west. You can walk right up to the massive 'Yamahoko' floats and admire their intricate details up close. There are 34 distinct floats, each with its own unique name and story.
