The houses here have a unique black soot-painted look, a historical way merchants hid their use of high-quality timber. Shops typically open around 10 AM.

Cook your own Hoba Miso at Hisadaya
I wanted to try the local Hoba miso, so I got the Hoba miso set meal at this really cozy restaurant. The best part is you get to cook the beef yourself on a little grill right at your table! The set comes with tofu, some vegetables, rice, and miso soup. Hoba miso is a dish of beef and vegetables mixed with sweet miso, cooked on top of a dried hoba leaf. It was so savory and tender, perfect paired with some rice.

I found out Takayama was an inspiration for the movie 'Your Name,' and this shrine was one of the inspirations! It's about a 20-minute walk from the main street, a bit out of the way but totally worth a visit for its peaceful atmosphere. See if you can spot the resemblance to the movie. The shrine is also famous for its 1000-year-old cedar tree.

Explore traditional farmhouses at Hida Folk Village
Take a short bus ride to Hida Folk Village. It's similar to Shirakawago with its Gassho-zukuri farmhouses, but this place functions more like a museum. It's quite big, with about 30 farmhouses that you can enter and look inside. You could easily spend 2-3 hours here, and there's even a small hike to the main shrine inside. If you love nature and history, you'll definitely enjoy this place.

I came here to try Takayama ramen, also known as chuka-soba. It's characterized by a light soup made from soy sauce and broth, and special curly noodles. But the best part for me was the grilled chashu. It's definitely worth a try if you're in the area.

If you keep walking along the markets, you'll come across Koma Coffee. Even though it's small, it has a proper espresso machine. I got the cookie cup macchiato, and the latte art was so cute! The coffee itself was surprisingly sweet from the cookie, and the best part is you can eat the cup after you're done. Plus, you get a nice view along the market.
