My first time at an onsen with an American friend was really awkward. We were sitting on the edge of a big round hot tub, about three feet apart, when an old guy came up and sat right between us. He was super chatty, asking where we were from and if we'd been to places like Utah. I was trying not to make eye contact because he had a gigantic, pale green, rectangle-shaped booger hanging out of his nostril, the size of an M&M. I was so distracted, desperately trying not to look at it. After about five minutes of talking, I finally got the courage to glance over, and it was gone. This made me panic even more, wondering where it went – was it in the hot tub? Did he sniff it back up? My buddy looked mortified too. We both, without saying a word, booked it to the showers to wash ourselves again, which is not what you usually do after getting out of the bath. It was a very silly, uncomfortable experience.
