If you're in Hakodate, you absolutely have to climb Mount Hakodate! It's only 334 meters high, and the hike takes about 45 minutes, but the views are incredibly rewarding. I started my solo hike from Hakodate Station, then took a bus from in front of Hakodate Morning Market. The bus ride itself offers beautiful glimpses of Hakodate. Once you get off the bus, just follow the signs to the parking area and then to the starting point. At the trailhead, there's an important information board with three different paths. I chose the most popular one, which is perfect for beginners and not complicated at all. The trail is peaceful, with only the sound of birds and leaves blowing in the wind – a short disconnect from the world. Every post has a clear signpost, and the path is well-maintained, not extreme, but enough to get you a little breathless. With every step, the city of Hakodate slowly opens up from behind the trees, like a little reward to keep you going. After 45 minutes, all the tiredness disappears as you're greeted by an expansive, priceless view of Hakodate city.
