Matsue Castle, also known as "Plover Castle" or "Chidori Castle," is one of Japan's 12 original castles and a designated National Treasure. Built between 1607-1611, it's famous for its elegant black color, which sets it apart from white castles like Himeji. It's the second largest among Japan's original castles and has survived earthquakes, fires, wars, and destruction during the Meiji era, retaining its original wooden tower. Inside, you'll find original wooden stairs, old floors, and a rare well within the building. The castle is surrounded by a park, moat, and the Horikawa sightseeing boat route. From the top floor, you can enjoy panoramic views of Matsue city and Lake Shinji. To get there from Matsue Station, take a bus for about 10 minutes, then walk for 5 minutes. Entry can be crowded during cherry blossom season, but generally, it offers a calmer atmosphere than other famous castles.
