Hiking Mount Nantai is an incredible but difficult experience. The trail up this active volcano is wild but well-marked, so you won't have trouble staying on track. The hike is estimated to take seven hours, so make sure to check in between 6 AM and 12 PM, as they won't let you start later to ensure you're off the mountain before sundown. The trail includes lava fields and rockfields, not technical climbing, but you'll be navigating big boulders and using all fours for much of the middle section. The top is also lava field going down. It's a 5.5-mile hike, but prepare for it to be much more difficult than you'd expect. Despite the challenge, the stunning vistas of beautiful mountains and snow-capped peaks are highly recommended. I was one of the last ones off the mountain, but it was worth it for the views.
