#TikTokCreatorSearchInsightsIncentive These blood-stained ceilings inside Kyoto’s temples are real floorboards from one of the final stands of the samurai era. In 1600, as Japan stood on the brink of civil war, Battle of Sekigahara was about to decide the future of the nation. Caught in the middle was Fushimi Castle. Only 380 samurai loyal to Tokugawa Ieyasu remained inside the castle to defend it against an army of nearly 40,000 led by forces aligned with Ishida Mitsunari. For 11 days they resisted overwhelming odds. When defeat became inevitable, the remaining defenders chose seppuku — the ritual samurai act of honorable death rather than surrender. The wooden floorboards beneath them became soaked with blood. Years later, those same boards were removed from the ruined castle and placed into the ceilings of several temples in Kyoto as memorials to the fallen warriors. They became known as the “Blood Ceilings” or Chitenjō. Some can still be seen today in temples like Yōgen-in and Genkō-an, where dark stains and human outlines remain visible in the wood over 400 years later.
